Behind the Name
Malpeque Bay is located in the little province of Prince Edward Island. This
large bay dips way into the center of the island, bringing the ocean into the
heart of the island and creating beautiful red sand beaches and tidal cliffs. Malpeque is the French spelling of the Mi'kmaq word Makpaak, meaning large bay or big water. The bay is an important habitat for shoreline birds, including the Piping Plover, which is endangered in Canada.
